Moldboard, Circle & Attachment Technology — How to Configure Your Grader

Moldboard Types & Blade Selection:
Standard Moldboard (Curved): 610mm–660mm height, 14mm skin thickness — optimum balance of material rolling and penetration for highway construction and general grading. The default blade on medium graders (180HP–220HP). Heavy-Duty Mining Moldboard: 660mm–710mm height, 16mm+ skin thickness with ribbed back reinforcement — 30% thicker skin than standard, significantly longer wear life in abrasive mining material. Hydraulic accumulator protects against impact. Extended Moldboard: Extra-length blade (up to 4.9m) for wide-pass grading and long-reach ditch work — increases productivity on large-scale earthworks by 15–20% per pass. Requires higher HP to pull when fully loaded. Cutting Edge Options: Double-bevel hardened steel cutting edge (152mm x 16mm) — reversible for double life. Carbide-faced cutting edge for mining — 3–4x longer life in silica-rich material but higher upfront cost. End bits — bolt-on replaceable, also reversible.
Circle & Drawbar — The Grader's Core:
Circle Assembly: Ductile iron or cast steel circle ring ID 1,530mm–1,680mm with induction-hardened tooth profile — rotates the moldboard 360° under full hydraulic power. Larger circle diameter = wider gear tooth spacing and higher torque capacity for turning a heavily loaded moldboard. Circle Drive: Hydraulic motor + planetary gear reducer driving a pinion gear meshed with the circle teeth. External drive (pinion outside the circle) is easier to service; internal drive (pinion inside) is more compact but harder to access. Circle Wear Inserts: Bronze or composite wear shoes between the circle top and the saddle — adjustable for clearance. Replace when clearance exceeds 1.5mm to prevent circle wobble and blade chatter. A-Frame Drawbar: Triangular tubular A-frame connecting the front axle ball joint to the circle yoke — transmits all moldboard push force from the machine to the blade. Bolted replaceable bronze wear pads at the ball joint and yoke pivot points — slotted for wear adjustment. Saddle / Yoke: Cast steel saddle supports the circle and moldboard assembly — pivots on the drawbar ball joint for moldboard tilt. Hardened lateral slide rails with grease grooves.
Ripper, Scarifier & Front Attachments:
Rear-Mounted Ripper/Scarifier: Hydraulic parallelogram ripper with 3 teeth or multi-shank scarifier with 5–9 teeth — mounted behind the rear tandem axles. Ripping depth 300mm–500mm, ideal for breaking up compacted gravel roads, asphalt before resurfacing, and hard-packed dirt before grading. Hydraulic lift/lower with down-pressure. Front Push Blade (Dozer Blade): Hydraulic 2.4m–2.8m straight blade mounted on the front frame — clears large windrows, spreads dumped material, and provides extra tractive effort when the moldboard is in float. Height adjustable from cab. Front Scarifier / Rake: 2.4m–2.8m hydraulic scarifier bar with 9–11 teeth mounted at the front — scarifies ahead of the rear moldboard in a single pass. More productive than rear scarifier + moldboard two-pass method. V-Plow / Snow Wing: Front-mount V-plow (3.0m–3.7m) for heavy snow clearing on mountain roads and mine access ways. Side-mounted snow wing extends moldboard reach to 5m+ for wide-pass snow removal. Both hydraulic with float. GPS/Laser Machine Control: Trimble GCS900 or Topcon 3D-MC GPS receivers on the moldboard + cab display — real-time blade position against digital design grade. Automatic blade control reduces survey staking, eliminates stringline, and improves grade accuracy to +/- 3mm. ROI typically within 6–12 months on large highway projects.
Articulating Frame — Why It Matters:
Articulation Angle: The front frame articulates hydraulically up to 25°–27° left or right relative to the rear frame — the pivot point is mid-machine directly under the cab. Articulation enables the moldboard to reach into ditches while the rear wheels stay on the road crown for stability. Articulation + Circle Offset: Articulate the frame into the ditch + slide the moldboard further left via hydraulic side-shift — the moldboard can reach up to 2m beyond the machine footprint without losing rear traction. Articulation + Crab Steering: Deliberately offset the rear axle track from the front axle track to compact fresh material with the rear tandems while the front axle runs on uncompacted terrain — eliminates the "windrow wall" that blocks the rear wheels from crossing freshly graded material. Turning Radius: With full articulation + front wheel lean, a medium motor grader can turn inside a 6.5m–7.5m radius — tighter than most articulated wheel loaders. Critical for cul-de-sac grading and confined construction site work. Articulation Lock: Mechanical lock pin for road transit — prevents unintended articulation at speed. Must be disengaged before grading.
Tandem Axles & Drive System:
Tandem Drive Tandems: Both rear axles are driven — tandem chain or tandem gear drive connects the two axles. Chain-driven tandems (most common on 120–220HP) use a heavy-duty roller chain with hydraulic tensioner inside an oil bath housing. Gear-driven tandems (mining class 240HP+) use spur gears — higher load capacity for sustained heavy push. No-Spin Differential: Mechanical differential lock (auto-engaging) on each tandem axle — transfers torque to the wheel with traction when the opposite wheel spins. Eliminates single-wheel spin on loose surfaces. Optional full-locking differential for extreme conditions. Final Drives: Inboard planetary final drives on medium graders; outboard planetary on mining class — outboard design reduces the half-shaft torque load and is easier to service without splitting the axle housing. Tandem Oscillation: The tandem box pivots on the rear frame center pin — allows each tandem axle to follow ground contours independently, keeping all 4 rear wheels on the ground for maximum traction. Total oscillation range 15°–20°. Tire Options: 14.00-24 bias-ply (standard on compact-medium) or 17.5-25 radial (standard on heavy mining) — radial tires provide 20% larger footprint for reduced ground pressure and improved cut resistance in rock. Tire chains available for snow and ice operation.
Front Axle, Steering & Cab:
Front Wheel Lean: Hydraulic front wheel lean cylinders — tilt the front wheels up to 17°–20° from vertical. Counteracts the side-thrust generated when the moldboard is angled and loaded, keeping the front axle tracking straight. Also increases grader stability on side slopes. Front Axle Oscillation: Center-pin oscillating front axle — ±15° oscillation for following ground contours while maintaining frame stability. Critical for smooth grade: if the front axle doesn't follow the ground, every bump translates into blade height variation. All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Option: Hydraulic drive motor in each front wheel hub — engages for additional traction on soft ground, steep grades, or when pushing with the front dozer blade. Add 15–20% tractive effort on demand. Disengages at road speed to save fuel. Available on XCMG GR180 and above. ROPS/FOPS Cab: ISO 3471/3449 certified, 360° glass with narrow pillars, floor-level rear window with uninterrupted moldboard visibility, HVAC with pressurized dust filtration, suspension seat with joystick armrest controls. Control Options: Traditional dual-lever (blade lift left/right + circle turn) on compact-medium models; full EH (electro-hydraulic) joystick controls on premium and mining models — reduces operator fatigue by 40% during 8–10 hour shifts.
